As you know, The winter olympics and paralympics are going to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea in February 2018. Everyone is very excited and we are really looking forward to watching the games soon.
There were some events related to PyeongChang olympics by korean government and I joined one of them. I wrote an essay about Korea and here it is !

Hello Everyone ! I’m Minseo Chae and I’m from S. Korea. In February of 2018, The winter olympics and paralympics which is an event for the people from all over the world will be held in PyeongChang, S.Korea. As a hosting country to the winter olympic, I’d like to share some information about Korea.
Korea is located in Northeast Asia and it has a long traditional history. There are a lot of beautiful structures like Hanok, palaces and as well as traditional culture. Also, Korean pop cultures like K-Pop are reaching its way to the entire world by their popularity . Take a look at some beautiful places in Korea !
- Seoul
Seoul is the capital of Republic of Korea. Seoul is a very big, developed city and there are a lot of remains of Joseon Dynasty ( 1392~1910 ) which was one of the dynasties in Korean Peninsula. During Joseon Dynasty , the capital was ‘Hanyang’, which is now called ‘ Seoul’ . Four big doors were created back then and they are surrounding Seoul to this day.
Have you heard of Gyeongbokgung ? Gyeongbokgung was the palace to the king during Joseon Dynasty. Gyeongbokgung is famous for its grandiosity and beauty so it attracts a lot of foreigners .
Near Gyeongbokgung, there is a Korean traditional street called ‘ Insadong’ . In Insadong, you can try some korean traditional food and see a lot of traditional souvenir kiosks and shops in those surrounding areas.
Visit Gyeongbokgung, Insadong and other cool places in Seoul and experience great korean culture.!
- Pyeongchang
Next, Pyeongchang, the city in which the winter games will be held ! Pyeongchang is a city in Gangwondo and there are a lot of good places in Pyeongchang too. If you visit Pyeongchang to see the olympic game, also take a look near the surrounding city :-)
In Pyeongchang, there is Daegwallyeong sky ranch. You can see a pretty view and also see some animals there. Also, In Pyeongchang, there’s a beautiful temple called ‘ Woljeongsa ’ . There are a lot of temples in korea and you can feel the beauty of the East if you visit there. Go to Woljeongsa and experience the feel of peaceful eastern atmosphere.
Beautiful islands
There are many islands in Korea. I’d like to tell you about the two famous islands . First, it’s called Jeju island. Jeju island is well known to foreigners which is located on the southern part of Korea. Since Jeju island is separated from Korean peninsula mainland , it created its own unique culture. There are lots of things to see in this warm, peaceful island.
Also, there’s an island called Dokdo which is located at the Eastern edge of Korea. ‘ Dokdo ’ is next to ‘ Ulleungdo’ which was selected as a hidden beautiful tourist spot in the world. Because it’s an island formed by a volcano activity, not many people can reside there.
Dokdo is composed of two large islands ( Dongdo, Seodo ) and 89 small rock islands around it. Dongdo is Eastern island and Seodo is Western island. There are few korean residents residing in the Western island and Dokdo is protected by korean Dokdo police officers who are stationed in the Eastern island. Dokdo is in the middle of the Sea called ‘ East Sea’ which is between Korea and Japan. It’s a peaceful, beautiful island that has a unique ecosystem . Furthermore, it’s the place that migratory birds rest. But back in 1905 Japan has claimed that Dokdo is a Japanese Island. Japan refers Dokdo as Takeshima and East Sea as Sea of Japan which are incorrect. This claim is not valid historically and under the international law. So, this was a pretty long introduction about Korea. I hope you guys visit Korea one day. The PyeongChang Olympics will be a stepping stone for the world to unite and work together towards peace. Please show your support towards PyeongChang olympic game so that it will be a complete success!
